Equipment and Maintenance

Laboratories are provided with performance and maintenance requirements by manufacturers of high-quality equipment. Preventative, monitoring and corrective actions are included in maintenance. Manufacturer’s guidelines should be available, followed and documented by the laboratories. Periodic maintenance schedules subdivided into daily, weekly and monthly tasks are maintained by most laboratories; they also maintain a log which documents required checks that have been accomplished. Moreover, documentation of instrument failures and corrective actions is also maintained through sequential logs. Required periodic recertification for equipment and daily temperature checks for temperature-sensitive equipment is also documented. Workload and experience of a laboratory helps it to device a monitoring schedule as there is no statutory period of time for monitoring important equipment functions like verifying centrifuge speed and calibrating pipetting devices.
