In this chapter, an attempt has been made to review the available literature produced over the past 50 years related to the stability of abused drugs m biological specimens. Studies have been performed mainly on blood and urine specimens, but also on other fluids. Specimens have been stored at ambient temperature, refrigerated, or frozen. The effects of pH and preservatives also have been examined. Undoubtedly, similar studies on a variety of drugs have been performed in laboratories, but these data have not been published. The authors encourage laboratories to make their data available because the issue of drug stability in biological specimens is central to forensic drug analysis.
